- Describe techniques supervisors can utilize to address trauma and secondary trauma in employees
Life trauma can lead to lifestyle practices that influence development of chronic illness. Understanding past traumatic events in individuals' lives can be key to effective care. Trauma-informed care is an approach to engaging people with a history of life trauma that recognizes trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role trauma plays in their lives.
For nurse leaders, trauma-informed care involves a two-pronged approach: applying trauma-informed principles to staff interactions and ensuring staff are equipped to provide trauma-informed care to patients. This means fostering a culture of safety and trust, recognizing the signs of trauma in staff, supporting their well-being through
debriefings and workload management, and equipping them with skills for patientcentered communication and de-escalation.
This session explores the role of nurse leaders in trauma-informed care. Specifically, participants will learn how they can build awareness and provide effective and meaningful education to team members on this important, yet sensitive topic. Participants will learn about critical elements of policies and procedures, screening and assessing for trauma, care planning in a trauma-informed way, and how care partners can assist with daily care in a trauma-informed way.
Current research shows that nurses are leaving the profession primarily due to burnout and stress. Nurse leaders play a pivotal role in supporting their teams and peers. In this session, participants will learn about trauma informed leadership and management, psychometric measures to assess burnout and trauma, and measures to facilitate individual “self-plans” to support their teams.
